Jenseits des Horizonts Beyond the Horizon
A helicopter pilot's stories from the world's most remote places.
Some of the world's most extraordinary places can only be reached by helicopter — across frozen oceans, between drifting icebergs, and onto research vessels at the edge of the known world. These are the flights that no one talks about. Until now.

Jede Expedition dauert rund drei Monate. Twice a year she heads into the ice: to the Arctic in the European summer, and to the Antarctic in the European winter. Each expedition takes about three months.
On board live 45 scientists from around the world and 45 crew members — including the four-person helicopter team: two pilots, two technicians. Medical care: one doctor and one nurse. The nearest hospital is very far away.
Two BK 117 helicopters sit in the hangar at the stern. While one flies, the other stands by as the rescue helicopter. Missions include flights with the EM-Bird — a torpedo-shaped sensor hanging on a cable below the helicopter that measures ice thickness — ice reconnaissance flights to find the route for the ship, and supply runs to Neumayer Station III in Antarctica.

Stefan Schaubensteiner is an Austrian helicopter pilot from the Pinzgau region with more than 2,500 flight hours. His training began in the USA and Canada, followed by multi-engine and instrument flying in Sweden. From 2015 to 2018 he flew in South Sudan for the International Committee of the Red Cross — MEDEVAC and evacuation flights in an active conflict zone. Since 2018 he has been flying in Germany: HEMS rescue, offshore and special missions, including rescue operations during the Ahr valley floods. Today he is flight operations lead and pilot aboard the research icebreaker Polarstern — between Arctic and Antarctic.
Etwa zehn Quadratmeter. Bett, Schreibtisch, Dusche. Fast nichts — und doch alles, was man braucht. About ten square metres. Bed, desk, shower. Almost nothing — and yet everything you need. Fun fact: exactly the size of a single cell in an Austrian prison. The scientists share theirs — two to a cabin.
A small hospital in the middle of the ice: operating room, X-ray, ultrasound, emergency care. A specially mounted bed compensates for the ship's movements. One doctor, one nurse — whatever happens, it has to happen right here on board.
Fixed times, almost military precision: breakfast at 7:45, lunch at 11:30, coffee and cake at 15:30, dinner at 17:30. On flying days the alarm rings at 6:30 — by 9:00 we are mission ready. Fresh salad lasts about 14 days. After that: beans, beetroot and cabbage from a tin.
Up north, polar bears — once just 50 metres away. Down south, emperor penguins staring back curiously for minutes. Seals sunbathing on ice floes. And sometimes a whale surfaces right next to the ship — and everyone on deck goes silent.
Farben. Manchmal liegt wochenlang Nebel. Keine Flüge, kein Gang an Deck. Colours. The water is dark blue, the ice is white, the sky is grey. I miss green — alpine roses at home, freshly cut grass, forest air. Sometimes there is fog for weeks. No flights, no walks on deck. Then you sit in your ten square metres and have to be careful not to get cabin fever.
Flying out there is the most fascinating thing I’ve ever done.
The weather is always stronger than your plan. But sometimes — when a whale surfaces right next to the ship and everyone on deck goes silent — those are moments you remember for the rest of your life.
